An oral cancer screening is a careful visual and physical exam of your mouth, tongue, throat, and neck, looking for subtle changes long before symptoms appear. Oral cancers are highly treatable when found early and dangerous when found late, and the difference between those outcomes is often nothing more than a routine screening at a dental visit. It is built into every exam at our office, quietly, every time.
During your checkup, we systematically examine your lips, cheeks, tongue and its undersides, palate, throat, and the floor of your mouth, and gently feel your neck and jaw for lumps or texture changes. We look for patches of white or red, sores that have not healed, and asymmetries, documenting anything worth monitoring and rechecking it at defined intervals. Anything genuinely suspicious is referred promptly for evaluation, with clear explanation, not alarm.
Oral cancers found early are highly treatable, survival rates for early detection are dramatically higher than for late discovery, and dentists find most of them, because we look at these tissues more often than any physician does. A two minute screening at each visit provides real protection and genuine peace of mind at zero added discomfort. It is quite possibly the highest stakes two minutes in the entire appointment.
Oral Cancer Screening in Rancho Bernardo | RB Dental Arts
A quick, painless screening that can quite literally save your life.
Every adult should be screened regularly, and it is built into every exam at our Rancho Bernardo office at no extra charge. Tobacco in any form, heavy alcohol use, HPV, significant sun exposure for lip cancers, and age raise risk, and the HPV connection means younger, healthier nonsmokers are affected more than most people realize. Between visits, any mouth sore that has not healed in two weeks deserves a call, that single rule catches more early cancers than any other.
It is quick, painless, and woven so seamlessly into your regular exam that most patients barely notice it happening, and that is the point. We narrate anything we are checking so nothing feels mysterious, and the overwhelming majority of findings are benign and simply documented for monitoring. What you get is not anxiety; it is the quiet confidence that trained eyes examine this territory twice a year, every year.
The screening itself takes about two minutes inside your regular exam, no extra appointment, no extra fee. If we find something to watch, we typically recheck it in two weeks, since most benign irritations heal in that window and anything persisting earns a closer look or referral. That two week rule applies to you at home as well: any sore, patch, or lump lasting beyond two weeks warrants a visit, promptly, not at your next cleaning.
Know your own baseline: glance at your tongue and cheeks in the mirror monthly, and report sores that do not heal within two weeks, persistent white or red patches, unexplained bleeding, numbness, or a lasting lump in the neck. Do not panic over every canker sore, most oral findings are harmless, but do not dismiss the persistent ones either. Reduce your controllable risks: tobacco, heavy alcohol, unprotected sun on the lips. Then let the routine screenings quietly do their job.
There is nothing to recover from, the screening is entirely noninvasive. If a spot earns monitoring, your only task is returning for the recheck, and if a referral is ever needed, we coordinate it promptly and walk you through exactly what happens next. The real aftermath of a screening program is statistical and personal at once: problems found at the stage where they are inconvenient rather than life altering. That is what those two minutes buy.
