If you are planning implants or oral surgery, dealing with unexplained pain that regular films cannot solve, evaluating wisdom teeth near the nerve canal, or investigating sinus involvement or jaw joint questions, this scan gives us answers, quickly and with a low radiation dose. It is a standard part of implant planning at our Rancho Bernardo office rather than an optional extra, because operating without the map is a compromise we decline to make.
The scan takes under a minute and requires nothing from you but standing still while the arm rotates once around your head. It is completely painless and far less awkward than traditional films, nothing goes in your mouth. We review the 3D images together on screen the same visit, and patients consistently find seeing their own anatomy in three dimensions clarifying: the recommendation stops being abstract when you can rotate the reason on the monitor.
Capture takes about 20 to 40 seconds, and the software reconstructs your scan within minutes, so we typically review results with you in the same appointment. For implant cases, we then plan placement on the scan, often merging it with a digital impression to design your surgical guide over the following days. There is no preparation and no downtime; the scan simply slots into whatever visit requires it, adding minutes, not appointments.
CBCT uses a focused, low dose beam, a fraction of a medical CT and comparable to everyday background exposure over a short period, and we scan only when the diagnostic value justifies it, following the standard principle of imaging only as needed.
